Our mission
Our mission is to support families experiencing homelessness in building a better future. For over 30 years, IHN at Alpha House has partnered with the community to shelter and support children and families experiencing homelessness in our community. During this time, our mission has remained constant and our programs have a single purpose – ending child and family homelessness.
Our Vision
Our vision is to help 100% of the families we work with find stable housing. More than providing just a bed and a roof for families, our goal is to fully support the families in all aspects so they are able to secure and maintain permanent housing.

History of Alpha House
An interactive timeline
1992
The Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) began as a grassroots response to the plight of families experiencing homelessness. Local faith organizations took turns providing food and shelter to families in-need.
2001
IHN moved to Alpha House West, a building generously donated by St. Joseph Mercy Health Systems (now called Trinity Health). This allowed the program to serve up to six families year-round and offer more stability, with each family receiving a private room, three meals a day, and basic necessities.
2024
In 2024, Alpha House West expanded, converting office spaces into much-needed private rooms, allowing capacity to more than double! Alpha House West currently can house up to 14 families, offering warmth and stability in addition to case management services.
2025
Trinity Health donated yet another building, Alpha House East, furthering our capacity to support homeless families in Washtenaw County. Each of 30 rooms has access to semi-private bathrooms and kitchenettes, bringing more safety and stability to even more families.
Now
As of early 2026, up to 44 families can be housed at Alpha House at any time!

The Interfaith Hospitality Network is now comprised of over 40 congregations in addition to many community partners helping Alpha House support families in need.
